New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
