A minimum of 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
